Katungul receives over $4M in Family and Domestic Violence funding
Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services has been awarded $4.2m by
the Australian Government as part of the Safe Places Emergency Accommodation program.
The funding, which was announced earlier in the week, will contribute to the refurbishment of 23
dwellings on the south coast allowing Katungul to increase emergency accommodation and provide
women and children somewhere safe to escape violence.
“Not only will this funding allow Katungul to provide the South Coast community with desperately
needed safe places for women and children at risk of family and domestic violence, but it will provide
wraparound care, advocacy and access to support services for these families too,” says Katungul CEO,
Joanne Grant.
Katungul Chairman, Ronald Nye also highlighted the positive economic ripple effect this funding would
have on the broader community.
“Katungul’s new Safe Places Emergency Accommodation will also provide local people with new
employment and training opportunities which are much needed in the wake of the recent lockdown. We
are pleased we’ll be able to start making significant positive changes for our local community and provide
necessary support and relief where it’s needed into the future, ” he says.
Minister for Families and Social Services and co-chair of Women’s Safety Ministers, Anne Ruston, said the
grants will help women and children experiencing domestic violence to find a safe and secure place to
stay.
“It is an important investment to create real and lasting change to reduce violence against women,” said
Minister Ruston.
The $60 million Safe Places Emergency Accommodation program is part of the $78 million funding
package which includes $18 million to continue the Keeping Women Safe in their Homes initiative. This
funding forms part of the $340 million Australian Government investment in the Fourth Action Plan of
the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010–2022.
Katungul Aboriginal Corporation Regional Health and Community Services provides both clinical and
community services support to the South Coast community from Batemans Bay in the north to Eden in
the south.
